We’re taking a guess that you already know the basics for healthy skin: getting enough sleep, drinking plenty of water, and washing your face. But, what about the tidbits in between?
The truth is, you could spend hundreds upon hundreds of dollars on the “trending now ~ fading soon” skin care products. However, if you’re not choosing the best cleanser for your specific skin type or cleaning your makeup brushes, your skin might not seem as “flawless” as you’d imagine.
12 Skin Care Tips
So, the following list below should definitely be on your “to-do” skincare list!
1: Use The Best Cleanser For Your Specific Skin Type
Many dermatologists recommend using a salicylic gel or benzoyl peroxide wash for oily or acne-prone skin. Dry mature skin appreciates a moisturizing glycolic or milky cleanser. Those that have melasma or brown spots should use an alpha hydroxy acid cleanser, more commonly known as a brightening wash. Washing with the wrong cleanser can result in an opposite reaction or a lack of improvement.
2: Avoid Being Too Extra
Caking on layers of multiple skin care products at once is extremely counter-productive for improving your skin’s health. Every new layer of product rubbed into the skin will only clog pores, and cause more breakouts. Less is more!
3: Smooth Things Out Twice A Day
Right after a shower and right before bed are the best times to moisturize. The skin is clean and relaxed, allowing the moisturize to provide the ultimate benefits. We know fragrant lotions are incredible, but try and avoid using lotion with heavy fragrances. You’ll also want to ensure that the moisturizer you use is gentle enough for everyday use. You don’t want to see any signs of irritation!
4: Leave Your Face Alone
I heard that a lot growing up. When we touch our face, it opens the opportunity to spread bacteria that can cause breakouts. We heard that touching our face can lead to an increase in wrinkles, scarring of the skin, and spread viruses like the flu.
5: Go H2O
If you ask a skin expert, they’ll tell you how crucial keeping our skin hydrated is for our health. Without enough water, our skin will be less radiant, and it naturally sags more. Think; moisturizing, cleansing, and anti-aging products. Oh yes, and don’t forget to drink about eight cups of water daily.
6: Avoid Exposing Your Skin To Direct Heat
It’s not only the sun to be concerned about. Heaters, fire places, bonfires, pizza ovens, and anything that generates high heat can wreak havoc on our skin. Exposure to direct heat leads to inflammation and our collagen breaks down. While it may be warm, use caution and consider your skin’s future. When dealing with direct heat, use protective gear!
7: Exfoliate Every Now & Then
Over 50 million skin cells are shed from our body daily. Without a bit of a nudge they can hang around, build up, and your skin will be left looking sullen. To combat sullen skin, use a product with a pH that’s neutral so it won’t dry out your skin while it exfoliates. Your face and body would both appreciate a little exfoliation once or twice a week.
8: Skin Vitamins
A balanced diet is crucial for the entire body, inside and out. Don’t forget your daily intake of antioxidants and ingredients that nourish the skin. Vitamin C is another one to add to the list!
9: Eat or Drink Your Greens
Coffee is the typical morning drink for many. However, try a smoothie loaded with delicious greens. If you’re not into that scene, try a shot of chlorophyll in the morning. Your skin will love you for it. Drain the puffiness in your face, and hydrate your skin with greens!
10: Maintain A Healthy & Balanced Diet
Our skin is a natural barrier that retains moisture, and it’s essential that you get enough omega-3 fatty acids. Toss some walnuts or flaxseed onto your salad for an omega-3 boost. Your skin will hold onto the moisture, keeping you fresh.
11: Keep Your Makeup Brushes Clean
Your makeup brushes should be washed at least once a week if you’re trying to fight an infection or clogged pores. Brushes used around the eyes should be cleaned twice a month, and any other brush only needs a bath once every month.
12: Rain or Shine Wear Sunscreen 365
A cloudy sky doesn’t mean the sun’s rays can’t still affect us. When we’re exposed to the sun, we should be using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more. Reapply the sunscreen every couple of hours.
If these things are already a part of your skin care to-do list, give yourself a pat on the back. If they’re not, you should add them now! Take care of the skin you’re in.
